When I was in junior high, I discovered SNL. My favorite things on the show were the commercial spoofs. The best usually featured Phil Hartman as some smooth salesman. One of his commercials was for a car that was luxury on the inside and jalopy on the outside.Well, I think I've discovered a subculture within the Volkswagen enthusiast community who have taken this idea to the next level. It's a unique take on the concept of a sleeper. Basically you find a crummy old Rabbit or Golf, pimp out the engine and the interior, then trash the exterior and strap a bunch of old luggage on the roof rack. And voilà! You've got yourself a super rad junker that'll take almost anything off the line. Seriously, if you know who these people are or what this type of VDub is called, lemme know!

ReplyDeleteOkay, I've done some further investigation. This crew is a modern day offshoot of enthusiasts who build what are apparently called "rat rods". Seems like this specific breed of VW rat rodders are a bit more particular about their rims than most.
ReplyDeleteMy dad is a big Rabbit enthusiast, and when I was young, he told me tales of men in the 1980s who put Porsche engines in Rabbits. (Is this even possible? I swear that's what he told me.) So, it's been going on for a while, I guess.
